Black Middle School was recently the
host of the 2008 Ocean National
Karate Tournament. This tournament
was produced by Master Wayne Nguyen
(waynenguyen.com) and sanctioned by
the Amateur Organization of Karate (theaok.org),
but competitors came from many
different styles including the
Kick-Start organization. The
Kick-Start program, which is offered
at Black Middle School, was created
by legendary martial artist and
famed actor Mr. Chuck Norris.
Traditional this tournament is held
at the San Luis Resort Convention
Center in Galveston, Texas during
September, but this year it was
cancelled and rescheduled because of
the devastation Galveston incurred
as the result of Hurricane Ike.
The competition began
promptly at 9:00am and continued
non-stop till approximately 5:30pm.
As is usually with any AOK
tournament, it was conducted fairly
and extremely efficient. With over
300 competitors and some registering
the day of the tournament, Master
Nguyen and his volunteer support
staff did an excellent job of
creating an outstanding tournament.
Competitors came from Houston,
Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi,
Dallas and many other great Texas
cities. Also, in addition to the
competitors, there were many more
spectators, which meant the Black
Middle School Gym was full to
capacity. To view the excitement and
action of this tournament, visit

100’s of pictures taken of pattern (kata),
sparring and weapons competitions.
